The Romance of Aviation

Thank you for your interest in my artwork.

I was raised in Fertile, Minnesota, a wonderful, small town. I've had a fascination with aviation since the time I could turn on the black and white TV and watch Sky King. During high school I earned my private pilot license. I didn't pursue flying as a career but I did get involved in the early ultra light rage, building and flying one of the first East Risers.

In 1982 I began my artistic journey when I met my friend and mentor, Harvey Schroeder. Harvey taught me value of not getting lost in the details of the subject and maintaining the artistic quality. The aircraft or subject of the painting is secondary to my goal of a stunning visual effect. An example is the F-4 painting shown above. Initially I painted the Phantom less in shadow, the left side of the fuselage was more lit by the sun. Details such as the 'star and bars' and tail code were visible. I liked the simple background, muted colors and loose brushstrokes but the painting was boring. The darn thing didn't sing! I could hear Harvey say, "there's no drama"! Then it clicked, the painting needed mystery, not detail. I fired up my brushes and darkened the areas facing the viewer. Some highlights were added and I think I now have a winner.

I've studied oil painting at the nationally recognized Schroeder Art Studio in Elk River Minnesota.

In 2022 I was honored to be presented with the Minnesota Aviation Hall of Fame award for the Artist of the Year. I have also won the Experimental Aircraft Association’s Par Excellence Award. In addition to displaying my art at the Air Venture Museum in Oshkosh Wisconsin numerous times my paintings have appeared in both Flying and Sport Aviation magazine.. I have also won First, Second and Third place awards at the First Annual Art Soup Festival in Elk River, Minnesota.

I am currently building a Legal Eagle ultra-light".
